Description

oh boy, uss constitution is stilll not fonished, some sails have to be applied yet and the rigging is still not completely done but at least to 90% finished. Meanwhile i did 2 other kits just to gimme a break from the big sailing ship, one is thisone and the other will be come soon and boy is it awesome. But first come to this little beauty

Backround: The german junkers ju88 was designed as a fast medium bomber and dive bomber but also as a heavy fighter or zerstörer aircraft. In fact it was basically used for every imaginable task, it was the most versitile aircraft of the war, it was what we would call today a mrca- mult role combat aircraft. Several variants were built and one of these was the ju 88 c production line which were the heavy fighter/zerstörer and nightfighter variants. The ju 88 c6 was used as both and was the most produced c variant. Differing a lot from the initial ju 88, the c models had their glass noses replaced by a solid metla nose housing several machine guns and cannons, depending on purpose. The ju 88 c wasused as a zerstörer aircraft to destroy bombers, providing ground atack and for hunting trains in soviet russia were most of the day fighter ju 88cs were used. The other batch of ju 88 c6 was the nightfighter variant you see here. These aircraft were armed with 3 7,92 mm machine guns and 3 20 mm mg/ff cannons as offensive armament, the 3 machine guns and one cannon in the nose and 2 more cannons in the teardrop gondola beneath the cockpit. For defense, the ju 88c had 1 or 2 7,92 mm machine guns facing backward in the cockpit and a mg 81 z twin machine gun (7,92mm) in the teardrop gondola facing backward. The later ju 88g nightfighter used the newer and more powerful mg 151/20 cannons. The nightfigthers also got a Lichtenstein radar which were also mounted in the solid nose with the antennas standing out of the nose. The ju 88c had a crew of 3 men and was powered by two jumo 211 engines each delivering 1500 ps depending on the variant of the jumo 211 as the ju88 was strapped on with many different engine for testing and evaluation sometimes flying even with two different kinds of engine in a sortie!. Its good maneuvrability for such a big airacraft mad eit ideal for the use as a zerstöere and nightfighter and several nachtjagdgruppen and geschwader were equipped with these airacraft. The ju 88 nightfighters were numerically the second most important nightfighters, after the bf 110. In operational use these aircraft were deadly, their heavy armament was enough to bring down any enemy bomber and their agility made them were successful nightfighters. Beeing produced until 1944, the ju 88c stayed in service till the wars end and was liked by its crews a lot.

The kit: Its brandnew(stand 2013) and is an "overwork" of revellls initial ju 88a4 which wa released 1 or 2 years earlier. Its in 1/72 has new conversion parts for the nightfighter and costs 18€. it has 105 pieces
Detail: Just like the initila ju 88 a4 the detail is great, its one of the newer revell kits and these are all very good, using new forms new tools and are done with great focus on qualityand detail. The cockpit of this kit is a dream especially for the scale and is very well detailed, every gun comes seperately and looks very realistic. The landing gear and landing gear bays also look very good.
*****
Fitting: No problem there everything fitted well, without major problems. Especially the wings have a perfect fit to the fuselage. Revell also has made a nice way to make the top of the fuselage as a seperate part so you dont have a seam like in other kits where you have 2 fuselage halves.
*****
Quality. No flash, no sinkmarks, just perfect which can be exspected as the molds are new
*****
Decals: Decals for 2 machines are included, the nightfighter and a zerstörer variant. The decals are well done with every small warning sign on the airplane authentically done.
*****
Extrapoints: I had a lot of fun doing this bugger, its a cool model kit of a very cool machine, especially as most think of the ju 88 as the bomber not the nightfighter. I really like the kit, it was a joy to do and colouring was also fun as i love applying nightifghter camo schemes. Additionally it has 2 spinnable props and the kit has parts to either build the nightfighter or the zerstörer variant.
*****
Fazit. This kit is highly recommended and among the many ju 88c6´s produced by other great name producers like hasegawa and tamyia, a true highlight, as this kit is at least as good as the other ones. Its also much cheaper ;)
Its easy to do this kit beacuse of the way you assemble it, module by module, first the cockpit, then the wings then the engines and so on, you never loose trach were you have been. I can absolutely recommend this kit, its also not to difficult for beginners although beginners should be careful with the antennas because they´re very fiddly and can easily brake if handled to rough.

Wow this paint job is amazing, a bit like the spots on whalesharks... definitely doesn't look easy. I've never seen this variant, you'd think the weird whisker-like antennas all over the nose would make it more iconic among WWII planes.
