Description

Acrocanthosaurus atokensis, meaning high spined lizard, was the biggest north american meat eater during the early and middle cretaceous. He was an Allosauroid, and it is uncertain in which family it belongs, but it was most likely a carcharodontosaurid. If so it would be the first and so far the only one in North America. It was over 12 meters long, and weight 3,5 tons. Its long spines ,which were up to 43 cm high, maybe carried a sail or a hump, this controverse is also be discussed on the spinosaurids spines. I made them as a brightly coloured sail, which I prefer to the hump theory. Acrocanthosaurus short arms were extremely muscular and powerful but their area of movement was limited. His big jaws were full of serrated teeth ideal for cutting but not for breaking bones. Acrocanthosaurus footprints and even eggs have been found in the paluxy river formation. These footprints show a big carnivore following the tracks of an herbivore. Tough it isnt prooved that these tracks were made by Acrocanthosaurus it ismost likely that they come from this dinosaur, as no other predator was so big as Acro during this time and region. Acrocanthosaurus died out during the middle cretaceous, and was replaced by a group of other big carnivores:the Tyrannosaurids. The conditions and reasns of his extinction arent clear , but maybe because of competition with the new evolved Tyrannosaurids and the extinction of its favourite prey: The giant sauropds like Paluxysaurus. Acrocanthosaurus is a very cool dinosaur, and i like him alot. He should be featured in dinosaur documentarys more often.
